Making a Mark

Today was a good day for Zygote's INK HOUSE.  Dave Craun and associate Hallie of Bialosky + Partners were by the house finalizing measurements for the drawings to be handed over to the contractor later this week. It's incredibly exciting to hone in on the vision for the space, decide where equipment will be placed, imagine the space with walls opened up, and boards off the windows.  Dave and his team are amazingly gifted architects who are cleverly and carefully considering all the needs for this new tight-ship of a printshop.    We installed a banner on the front porch to let passers-by know about what is to come on Lotus Street.  

Soon contractors will be hard at work to make this house a fully operational etching and silkscreen contract shop.   As I was attaching the banner to the porch,  our next door neighbor came by and introduced herself to us and asked about the plans.  She seemed excited to be gaining us as new neighbors and was very welcoming. The Print Garage will be the second stage of this project where it will provide the community with open air printing and engagement.

We are proud to have Dave W. Craun, AIA, and LEED AP of Bialosky + Partners to be  the lead visionary for INK HOUSE. This ADA accessible space will be offer synergies to both Waterloo  and LOTUS streets. Dave is working with our Zygote staff and Production Manager, Christi Birchfield. Dave happens to be the talented husband of our Associate Director, Jen Craun, so his knowledge and long commitment to Zygote and the understanding of our organizational makes this process of space and concept even more appreciated.  The firm is contributing their support to our efforts to build a green, efficient, secure, accessible space and environment for our staff, clients and visitors. Next steps will be bringing the drawings to our general contractor and breaking ground for the expansion.  In the meantime,  Zygote will be scheduling  cultivation events for artists and  organizations (at our home-base on 30th Street) to preview some of the creative opportunities and plans that the INK HOUSE will present to the greater community.

WELCOME to COLLINWOOD-INK HOUSE 423 Lotus Street

423 East 156th Street will transform into 423 LOTUS St. and be known as THE INK HOUSE, and be one of the many new hopeful new creative industries  to the North Collinwood Arts and Culture district. Currently, Waterloo is getting a one way facelift with the westbound Waterloo will be started again in the Spring when this frigid weather blows over. The Westbound Waterloo streetscape will end in summer of 2014. Merchants and businesses are open and working around the the construction, so don’t let that curb your visits to the area. Three new FREE parking lots are already complete which includes lighting, widened streets and walkways and way-finding markers to better situate visitors to the area. We are nestled next to a great artisan glass workshop called Azure Glass run by our neighbors Mary and Ben. Down the street the fantastic antics and architecture of Loren Naji will be a great destination and venue for installation and sculpture in Satellite. They are already taking proposals-so send away. We are starting this blog to keep everyone abreast of our project and to develop some excitement about support and opportunities to create editioned prints. See more to come…
